Technology in Golf: Past, Present and Future

1.DISTANCE ISSUES FACING THE GAME

  • "The average drive will soon be 300 yards"--------- (1907)
  • "The Rules of Golf Committee intimates that it will not sanction any substantial departure from the traditional and accepted form and make of clubs, which, in its opinion, consist of a plain shaft and a head which does not contain any contrivance, such as springs"-----(1909)
  • The Committee is guided in making these (power of the ball) experiments by the fact that the yardage of championship courses had been materially increased in the past few years and that the power of the ball should be reduced----------- (1924)
  • Any change in the ball should be adopted simultaneously and be identical in both the U.S. and the U.K. There should be uniformity in the game in the two countries-------------- (1925)
  • Today's courses will become obsolete unless the USGA does something about improved club and ball technology------(1987)
  • The laws of Physics will effectively govern the performance of all equipment------- (2001)
