Golf Clubs...

Frank probably approved the design of all the clubs in your bag during his 26 years as USGA Technical Director. He has made approximately 5000 decisions on clubs and devices used in the game.

Graphite Shafts...

Frank invented the graphite shaft in 1969 while working for Shakespeare Sporting Goods.

Golf Balls...

Frank directed the testing of all the balls played in the last quarter of a century and developed the Overall Distance Standard. He also directed the development of the Indoor Test Range (ITR) to monitor ball performance in the future through the use of computer simulation. This system is used by manufacturers to help perfect ball aerodynamic design.

Rules...

Frank was primarily responsible for writing, rewriting, modifying or introducingevery rule governing equipment in the Rules of Golf.

Handicap...

Frank assembled the Handicap Research Team that was responsible for the handicap and slope system used today. He also initiated and directed the development of the GHIN System.

Green Speed...

Frank introduced the Stimpmeter to the world of golf redesigning Eddie Stimpson's concept.
