Why titanium hits it further
than persimmon
During impact a titanium driver’s clubface deforms on initial
contact (during the compressive phase) and recovers while still in contact
with the ball (the recovery phase). The face thus acts like a trampoline
during the approximately .0005 seconds of impact. This enhances the
post-impact rebound velocity of the ball compared to the rebound off
a persimmon-headed (wooden) club, or even the thicker-headed metal woods
of a couple of years ago. So it does go further.

What is lie angle and do I need it altered?
The lie angle is dependent on your swing plane and may require some
adjustment. Once again, the standard lie is good for most golfers. And
you should only consider making an adjustment if your ball flight indicates
there is a problem. If the lie angle is too flat the ball will generally
go right of the target, and if it’s too upright the ball will
generally go left. Use of a “lie board” allows you to determine
the angle the sole of the club makes with the ground during impact.
If necessary this can be adjusted using a bending machine, which most
pros have.

Differences in performance of the top balls
Balls can affect performance, but much of the difference depends on
your ability to recognize and take advantage of these characteristics.
Generally, the differences in performance between the top brands are
a lot smaller than the variance in our ability to hit a consistent shot.
And certainly the quality control has improved far beyond our ability
to detect differences, which wasn’t the case twenty or thirty
years ago.
