Tiger's wood dilemma

Tiger Woods has been in the headlines recently regarding his driver switch from his Nike driver to his old Titleist. He said referring to a precise shot on the range; "You know why I can hit that shot? It stays on the [club] face a fraction longer and enables you to shape it. Just like the old persimmon drivers that guys could move. The new drivers are too hot."

If Tiger believes this, that’s all that matters, as in his mind he has developed his own explanation of why the club performs differently and has thus developed the needed confidence to eliminate any negative thoughts about his driver from interfering with the rest of his game.

Having confidence in your equipment is the key to your success on the course. You should always feel truly comfortable with the clubs you select no matter how much pressure is applied from outside influences to sway you in another direction. If you are not comfortable you will be thinking about the equipment when this should be the last thing on your mind when making a stroke.

Confidence will allow you to hit them long and straight.

Three keys to confidence in your equipment

#1. Be sure that the clubs you choose are designed for your skill level. Based on sound technology clubs are now designed to be forgiving for less than perfect impacts. The bad shots will not be as detrimentally affected with a cavity back club as with a blade.

The Frankly First Call and The Maltby Playability Factor tables on franklygolf.com list in excess of 230 different iron club models with the associated game improvement categories for your convenience.

#2. Once you have chosen the club type and model make sure that the shaft flex is such that you feel in control of the club head through the swing. Most golfers generally select shafts, which are too stiff and are continuously fighting the club to get it to perform reasonably well. A consistent smooth tempo can more easily be achieved with the right shaft flex.

As a guide a medium swing speed golfer should tend toward using a regular flex shaft. As one increases swing speed to the higher range i.e. driver speeds of 95 to 110 mph only then should one consider moving to the stiff-flex range. Lower than average swing speeds should tend to a more flexible shaft.

# 3. Don’t keep switching balls to get extra distance on your drives or control around the green, as the differences between the premium multi-layered (3- and 4- piece) balls and the 2-piece ball is more a matter of price than performance for most of us.

The premium ball is designed for the elite player who can truly take advantage of the subtle differences in performance. There is no reason why you should not use this ball and it will certainly not penalize you in any way whatsoever.

So choose a ball that you feel comfortable with and can build confidence in using no matter how much it costs. Making a positive selection and sticking with it will avoid you thinking about whether it is the right ball for you at address or on your back swing.
